First Ward Place
Location: FIRST WARD NEIGHBORHOOD, CHARLOTTE, NC
Size: 23 units / 4 buildings
Client: Charlotte Housing Authority
Story: FIRST WARD PLACE RENOVATED HOUSING IS THE FIRST PHASE OF A DRAMATIC REDEFINITION OF PUBLIC HOUSING IN CHARLOTTE. THIS PROJECT REPLACED THE PREVIOUS AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT OF EARLE VILLAGE WITH A COMMUNITY OF DIVERSE CULTURAL, SOCIAL, AND ECONOMIC LEVELS.
This small area was saved for renovation to facilitate quicker placement for some residents and to take advantage of the sound existing structures. The buildings were completely gutted and renovated to include all new interior walls with open style floor plans and new exterior facade treatments. This added touch of architecture was intended to promote a more neighborhood feeling with individual unit entries highlighted and emphasized by new porches and bay windows.
First Ward Place was the recipient of the AIA Charlotte Honor Award for design and the AIA North Carolina Merit Award for design.
